CNC Machine Selection by Part Features
The machine that makes a part is decided by the part, not by the shop's favourite spindle. Enter the envelope, how many faces carry features and how tight the tolerance is, and see the configuration that fits.
Part description
A selection guide, not a machine specification. Final machine choice depends on the shop's actual equipment list, tooling and fixtures — ask for the equipment that will run your part.
Result
Rules are based on feature direction, envelope size, tolerance class and material. A 3+2 machine is almost always the cheaper correct answer for parts that need re-orientation but not continuous 5-axis motion.

Configuration compared
| Configuration | Best for | Setups | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-axis vertical | Features on one face, flat parts, plates | 1 plus flips | Deep cavities need long tools; each flip adds setup error |
| 3+2 indexed | Features on 4-5 faces, no continuous curves | 1 | Indexing accuracy and fixture access on the underside |
| 5-axis simultaneous | Curved surfaces, impellers, undercuts, complex blends | 1 | Higher hourly cost; programming and simulation effort |
| Turning centre | Predominantly round parts, shafts, bushes | 1 | Milled features need a second op or a live tool |
| Mill-turn | Round parts carrying milled flats, cross holes, slots | 1 | More complex programming; not always faster than two simple machines |
| Swiss-type | Small-diameter, long, slender parts | 1 | Limited work envelope; tooling specific to the machine |
More axes does not mean better. Each extra axis adds machine-hour cost and programming time, so the cheapest correct process is the one whose capability matches the part, not the one with the largest number in its name.
