CNC Machining Time Estimator
Cutting time from the toolpath is only part of what a part actually costs in machine hours. This tool adds tool changes, load and unload, and setup so you get a realistic batch time.
Job parameters
Estimated in your browser. Sanity-check figures only — a CAM simulation with your machine model is more accurate.
Result
Cutting time = toolpath length ÷ feed rate. Feed rate = chip load × flutes × RPM. Cycle time = cutting + tool changes + load/unload. Batch time = setup + quantity × cycle time. Rapid moves are not modelled separately.

Where the machine hours actually go
| Component | Typical share on a small part | What reduces it |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting | 40 – 60 % | Higher feed and speed, better toolpath, less air cutting |
| Tool changes | 5 – 20 % | Fewer tools; combining features into one cutter |
| Load / unload | 10 – 25 % | Fixtures that locate in one move, second-op workholding |
| In-process inspection | 5 – 15 % | Consistent process, probing only critical features |
| Setup (amortised) | Falls with quantity | Standard fixtures, pallets, keeping offsets in the machine |
On batches of a few dozen parts the loading and setup components usually outweigh any cutting-speed gain. Going from 5,000 to 7,000 RPM on a 40-second cut saves a few seconds; eliminating two tool changes or one extra setup saves minutes.
