How to Read a CNC Machining Quote
Two shops can quote the same drawing five times apart. The reason is almost never "one is greedy" — it's that the line items hide different assumptions. Here's what each line covers, and which ones actually move the price.
The lines you'll usually see
Not every shop lists all of these separately, and that's exactly the trap: a low headline number may simply have buried a line you'd have questioned. Map each quote to this list before comparing.

Three lines that decide the number
1. Machining time. This is where quotes diverge most. A part toleranced at ±0.01 mm everywhere costs more and scraps more than the same part at commercial tolerance — and a 5-axis route that holds features in one setup can be cheaper overall than three 3-axis setups, even at a higher hourly rate. 2. Setup. Because setup is fixed per order, 40 parts cost far more per piece than 4,000. If a quote looks high, ask what the setup covers and whether the design can be changed to need fewer setups. The small-batch explainer shows the curve.
3. What's bundled vs separate. One shop lists finishing and inspection as line items; another rolls them into the unit price. Compare the full total against your drawing's real requirements — the cheapest quote that meets the spec is the real winner, not the cheapest number on paper.
Questions to ask before you accept
- Is the quoted tolerance what my drawing actually requires, or tighter (and pricier) than needed?
- Are setup and programming one-off, and do repeat orders reuse them?
- What inspection comes with the shipment — CMM report, FAI, material certs?
- Is the finish I specified included, or a surprise line later?
- Is the shipping term EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP — and who pays import duty?
