CNC Machining Cost — What Actually Drives the Price

There is no single price for “a CNC part.” The same envelope can cost very differently depending on five levers. Here is what they are, why we quote per drawing, and how to get a number you can trust.

Why There Is No Flat CNC Price

A CNC quote is built from machine time, material, programming, fixturing and inspection — not a catalogue rate. Quoting a number before seeing the part would be a guess, and a guess either prices you out or hides cost that shows up later. So the honest answer to “how much is a CNC part” is “it depends on your drawing.”

The Five Levers That Drive Cost

How Quantity Changes the Per-Part Price

Every order carries setup — programming, fixturing, first-article checks. At one or ten pieces that setup sits on few parts, so the per-piece price is higher. From the low hundreds upward the setup is spread thin and the price drops. We do not pad the unit price just because the quantity is low; you simply see setup stated openly.

Why We Quote From Your Drawing

A real quote separates material, machine time and finishing so you can see where the money goes. Send a clean drawing with dimensions, tolerances and material, and you get a transparent number — usually within 24 hours. The browser-side instant quote tool gives a reference price without uploading files.

How to Get the Lowest Real Price

Relax tolerances that are not functionally critical, pick a common material (aluminium 6061 over exotics unless needed), keep the geometry fixturing-friendly, and send a clean drawing. Small changes here often cut more cost than chasing a cheaper shop. For first-time, low-quantity jobs this matters most — see our small orders page.

What We Never Do

No hidden fees, no penalty surcharge for small batches, no charge to get a quote. The number you see is the number we machine to.

FAQ

CNC Cost Questions

The questions buyers ask before sending a file — answered from the buyer's side.

How much does CNC machining cost per part?
It depends on five factors — material, geometry, tolerance, quantity and finish. There is no flat price, so we quote from your drawing. A simple aluminium part costs far less than a tight-tolerance titanium part, and the per-piece price drops as quantity rises.
Why can’t you give a price without a drawing?
To price a part we need its dimensions, tolerances and material, because those decide machine time, tooling and scrap risk. Without the numbers we can only discuss the design, not give a reliable quote.
Is CNC machining cheaper than 3D printing?
For metal, functional parts above roughly 20–50 pieces, CNC is usually cheaper because print time and post-processing scale linearly. For a few plastic concept models, printing often costs less. It depends on material and quantity.
Does a tight tolerance cost more?
Yes. Holding tighter than needed slows the cutting cycle and raises scrap risk, and the shop prices that in. Relax non-critical tolerances to standard and the cost usually drops.
How can I lower my CNC machining cost?
Relax tolerances that are not functionally critical, choose a common material, keep the geometry fixturing-friendly, and send a clean drawing. Those changes cut more than switching shops.
Do you charge extra for small orders?
No. We do not pad the unit price for low quantity. Setup is stated openly in the quote rather than buried or surcharged.
How fast will I get a quote?
A detailed engineer quote within 24 hours for most parts. For a reference price without uploading files, use the browser-side instant quote tool.
Do you charge for the quote itself?
No. Getting a quote — from a drawing or via the instant tool — is free, with no obligation.
